Murrays has been on the technological cutting edge since our inception, and we continue to invest in our proprietary website technology to better serve you.
Typically, when we make an improvement to our website the change is seamless and such a natural upgrade that we don’t mention it. However, we just completed a new round of changes that we are so excited about that we needed to share the news with you all.
Search is such an important tool in the auction world. Our auctions can have hundreds of lots each, and reviewing each lot for items in your favourite collecting categories can necessitate a large time investment. Being able to quickly and accurately search an auction is critical.
We have vastly improved our search tool – not just with its speed and accuracy, but with supplemental features around our search tool. This makes finding what you’re looking for amongst the many tens of thousands of items easier than ever.
Advanced Searching
We have an exciting “Advanced Search” built right into our search tool! For those of you who like to really drill down your results to find exactly what you’re looking for, this feature is for you.
By default, when you enter your keywords, our tool will find lots best matching either or all of your keywords, which means if you were to search for “gold watch” it will find lots that match both “gold” and “watch,” and then lots that match either “gold” or “watch.”
By adding a plus sign (+) to the start of keywords that are required to be match it will tell the search tool that the results must match. For example, “+gold +watch” is likely to return more accurate results. You can also use the minus sign (-) to tell the tool that the word must be excluded. The + and – modifiers can be combined too, for example “+gold +watch -ladies” to find all gold watches that are not described as “ladies” watches.
More information about this feature, along with other search tool tips and tricks, can be found here.
Sorting Your Results
You could use the most accurate keywords to precisely match what you’re looking for, but if the item sold years ago it can still mean a lot of scrolling.
By default, our new search tool will sort your results based on what it thinks is most relevant to your keywords. However, you can sort by the auction date, the estimate range, or the price realised for sold items.
Followed Keywords
If you are continually searching for items in multiple collecting categories, for example if you collect both costume jewellery and Rolex watches, rather than entering your search keywords in every time you visit our site you can simply opt to follow specific keywords.
Once you have followed keywords simply go to your “My Account” area and easily load the latest search results.
Email Notifications
Instead of doing the searching yourself, simply let us notify you when a new lot matching your search keywords is added to an auction!
When you decide to follow a keyword, you can easily opt-in to receiving email notifications; or you can toggle the feature on or off for each keyword in your “My Account” area.
These emails are sent no more than once a week, and only when there are new lots matching your keywords. This opt-in is only used for this purpose, and you can opt out at any time.
Accessing The New Search Tool
The search tool is accessible right on our homepage, as it was before, but you can now click the magnifying glass icon in the header on any page throughout our site.

In addition to improving our site-wide search, we have added the same improved search to each catalogue!
At the top of every online catalogue is a search bar, which allows you to search for items exclusively in that catalogue. This can be particularly useful when looking for specific items in a very large auction.
We conduct 20-30 auctions a year covering a wide selection of collecting categories. We have added a notable results page highlighting some of our more notable sales, sorted in reverse chronological order. The top three recent notable results also now appear on our homepage.
As part of ongoing improvements to our site, we have slightly reconfigured the main navigation bar on our site to make what you’re looking for easier to find, and easier to explore our site.
We’re excited to show you what we have planned for the future. If you have any suggestions, corrections, questions or just want to chat, please contact us at any time!
